An EOB is not a bill

An Explanation of Benefits (or a Medicare MSN) is a notice from the plan. It lists what was billed, what the plan allowed, what the plan paid, and what it thinks you may owe. Many of them print “this is not a bill” on the first page.

A bill is a statement from the provider or a collector asking you to send money to them. The patient share on the EOB and the amount due on the bill should match before you pay.

What to do

  1. Read the line that says whether it is a bill.
  2. Wait for the provider statement if you only have an EOB.
  3. Compare the patient share to the amount due. If they differ, ask in writing before you pay.
  4. Do not pay the insurer from an EOB unless the page clearly says to.
